About Us
The story of the Expedition Bar is a simple one.
A family member (backpacker and outdoor junkie) commented to us one day that we could market our wildly popular soft peanut brittle candy as trail food, since as a food-based candy it had great fat and protein macros and was very satiating. That thought rattled around in our heads for a few months and we decided to experiment. We dug into learning (and went down the rabbit hole night after night) poring through academic papers and scientific studies on the optimal food fuels for athletes and people engaged in strenuous outdoor activities. We read about the optimal percentage of calories from carbs (+/- 58%), the need for a true energy bar to be "high density" (high carbs and high calories per ounce), and that it was important to have a good balance of fast-burning fuel, slow-burning fuel, and blood sugar stabilizing elements to really avoid "the bonk" (total muscle glycogen depletion)...that "dead legs and arms" feeling when you're just gassed and hit the wall.
But if we were going to make an energy bar...we knew it had to be delicious. Not just "it's an acquired taste and I can eat it because...well...it's not terrible". Our bar had to actually deliver and be delicious. Over the years living active lives we've choked down so many terribly energy bars, protein bars, nutrition bars (and other "power products") that we were crystal clear on what we didn't want. Too many products out there taste like combo of dog food and bird seed thrown in a blender and pressed into bars. And it's our rather jaded view that no matter how something is presented...if it's so bad you have to force yourself to eat it...it's not worth it. We wanted our bar to be delicious first and foremost while providing smart energy boost, and because of our ingredient choices it contains absolutely zero gluten, dairy, soy, egg, tree nuts, caffeine, or trans fats.
So we started with a lot of good stuff. Gluten-free rolled oats and cinnamon to stabilize blood sugar.. Dried cranberries and raisins for the longer-burning fuel. Peanuts and peanut butter for satiety and to provide fat and protein for the "real food" nutrients...and our candy to hold it all together and provide the fast-burning fuel. Delicious from the first bite to the last, you just want to keep eating this bar.
We know you will love our Expedition Bar...because we didn't stop until this was something we love to eat!
